ST. MARY'S CITY, MD (12/02/2011)(readMedia)-- Shelby Perkins of Forest Hill, Maryland, has been awarded the Sarah Michele Guineviere Pyles Memorial Scholarship at St. Mary's College of Maryland. The scholarship was established in 2011 by the family of Sarah Pyles to benefit students with academic merit and financial need, and who have completed at least one year at St. Mary's with a preference for political science and/or art history students. Selection is based on a winning one-page essay on "how I would change the world and make it a better place."
Perkins, Class of 2014, is majoring in political science and international languages and cultures, Spanish. She is involved in the Student Government Association, F.U.S.E (Feminists United for Sexual Equality), Invisible Children, and Soccer Without Borders: Nicaragua. Perkins intends to travel the world before attending law school or graduate school and joining the Peace Corps.
St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.
