Shelly Silver: A Shonda for All Taxpayers

NEW YORK, NY (07/27/2018) (readMedia)-- Today, former Speaker of the New York State Assembly, Sheldon Silver, was sentenced to 7 years in prison, on federal corruption charges. At his Silver's conviction in 2015, he was sentenced to 12 years, though the deicison was overturned.

In response, Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause/NY, issued the following statement:

"Former Assembly Speaker Shelly Silver's sentencing is a shonda for all taxpayers. Elected officials who are found guilty of public corruption should not get special treatment, but should be subject to the same sentencing guidelines as any other criminal. Silver's repeated conviction highlights – yet again – that Albany is long overdue for real, comprehensive reforms, like closing the LLC loophole and publicly financing elections. It's time to get it done."
