Six Earn Regional and Conference Honors for GCC Softball

BATAVIA, NY (05/26/2016)(readMedia)-- Region III of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) recently recognized six members of the GCC softball team with all-region and all-conference honors for the 2016 season.

Freshman infielder/pitcher Mackenzie Weber (Wayland, NY), sophomore pitcher Shannon Baker (Cory, PA) and freshman outfielder Joelle Kaminski (Attica, NY) were named to the All-Region III Team. Weber earned a spot on the first team and Baker and Kaminski garnered second team honors.

Weber was tied for fourth in the region in home runs with nine and led Genesee in most offensive categories, including hits (54), runs batted in (27), average (.495) and runs scored (33). She made 14 appearances on the mound and tallied a record of six wins and six losses with a 3.15 earned run average, the ninth lowest in the region.

Baker was fourth in the region in earned run average, pitching to a 2.49 ERA. She finished eighth in the region in strikeouts with 89 and held a record of six wins and seven losses in 15 appearances. At the plate, Baker was tied for third on the team in total hits with 39, 12 of which went for extra-bases. She finished with three home runs and 23 runs batted in.

Kaminski hit .406 with nine of her 39 hits going for extra-bases. She scored 28 runs and drove in 15 and was five-for-six in stolen base attempts. In the field, she made just four errors in 50 chances, tallying a fielding percentage of .920.

In addition to all-region honors, Weber and Baker were named to the All-WNYAC First Team and Kaminski was selected to the second team. Joining them were sophomores Dani Wilshire (Attica, NY) and Amanda Dow (Greece, NY) and freshman Sydney Brenton (Alexander, NY), who were all named to the all-conference second team.

Wilshire, an infielder, finished second on the team in home runs with five and collected 25 hits and a .342 batting average. She appeared in 29 of GCC's 31 games this spring and scored 22 runs while driving in nine.

Dow, a utility player and pitcher, was second on the team in batting average, hitting .462 in 78 at bats. She scored 16 runs, drove in 13 and stole 10 bases. On the mound, she held a 2.71 earned run average, the sixth lowest in the region. She finished the spring with three wins and three losses in seven appearances.

Brenton led GCC in stolen bases with 12, which was tied for 13th in the region. Her 42 hits were second on the team and she scored 26 runs while driving in 13. She also collected 16 extra-base hits, two of which were home runs.

Genesee advanced to the regional tournament for the second spring in a row, falling in the opening round to Monroe CC. GCC finished the year with a 15-16 overall record.
