Special Day Highlights and Discounts at the Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, IA (08/01/2018) (readMedia)-- The 2018 Iowa State Fair kicks off next week. Special celebrations, discounts and displays will be featured throughout the Fair, including Heroes' Day, Veterans' Day, Older Iowans Day, and Extreme Sunday on the last day with a food donation discount.

Thursday, August 9, opening day of the Iowa State Fair, Heroes' Day celebrates EMTs, fire and rescue, policemen and paramedics. Special displays will be on Grand Avenue and the Governor's Lifesaving Awards and Outstanding Service Awards will be presented at the Susan Knapp Amphitheater at 10:30 a.m. Fairgoers are encouraged to wear a shirt representing their hometown department in honor of the those who serve our communities.

Monday, August 13, the Iowa State Fair will honor active and retired members of the U.S. military for Veterans' Day. Throughout the day there will be special performances and displays. The Veterans' Day parade, an annual tradition, will feature military bands, vehicles, branches of the military and floats on the Grand Concourse starting at 11 a.m. Active and retired members of the military with a military I.D. and their spouses can receive discounted gate admission for $9.

Wednesday August 15, is Older Iowan's Day. Fairgoers ages 60 and older, receive $9 gate admission. Check out the Older Iowan's Day tent located on the Grand Concourse along with special programming throughout the day such as the Older Iowan's Cookie Decorating Contest in the Elwell Family Food Center.

Sunday August 19, is Extreme Sunday AND canned food donation day. Enjoy the last day of the 2018 Iowa State Fair with special pricing on gate admission; $9 adults and $5 child (ages 6 to 11) until 9 p.m. Receive an additional $3 off adult admission with the donation of 3 non-perishable food items donated to the Iowa Food Bank.

Weekdays Monday through Thursday after 5 p.m. enjoy $9 adult and $5 child (ages 6-11) discounted admission.
