Spring concerts highlighting flute, sax, percussion hosted by Elizabethtown College

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (03/03/2012)(readMedia)-- The Elizabethtown College Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Music Division sponsors a series of instrument-specific concerts in March and April. Highlighted are flute, saxophone and percussion. All concerts are free and open to the public.

The College's 6th annual Flutefest, spotlighting flutes from piccolo to bass, takes place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 19, in Zug Recital Hall. Flutefest, under the direction of Paula Nelson, features the Arioso Flute Choir and a variety of small flute ensembles and soloists.

Featured flute solos include compositions by Ibert, La Montaine, Burton, Rutter and Schocker. Small ensemble selections include works by Köhler and Devienne.

The Arioso Flute Choir offers the Allegro from Handel's Water Music Suite, Bach's Hark Now!, The Gentle Flutes in Chorus from Cantata No. 206, Fauré's Pie Jesu and Thorne's Badinerie Bites Back.

All performers will join together in Scott's Scottish Flute Stomp.

The Elizabethtown College Saxophonium, a concert featuring saxophone students of Faith Shiffer, adjunct instructor of saxophone and clarinet, as well as a professional sax quartet, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in Gibble Auditorium in the College's Esbenshade Hall.

The performers -- a trio, a quartet and a sextet -- present works by jazz musicians Paul Desmond and Lennie Niehaus. The ensembles also perform Beethoven, Debussy and Mozart.

At 3 p.m. Sunday, April, 15, the Elizabethtown College Percussion Ensemble under the direction of James Armstrong, will be joined by the Ephrata High School Percussion Ensemble, performing under the direction of Steve Goss. The concert, featuring contemporary chamber percussion ensemble works, takes place in the K?V in the College's Brossman Commons.
