CANTON, N.Y. (12/10/2013)(readMedia)-- St. Lawrence University linebacker Obinna (Obi) Nwaigwe '14 was named to D3football.com's All-East Region team for his play throughout his senior campaign.

Nwaigwe earned Second Team honors at defensive end, after a banner year that saw the Valley Stream, N.Y., native finish the regular season in the top-5 in the country in both sacks and tackles for a loss. He is the first St. Lawrence selection to the All-Region Team since Trevor Saunders in 2010 (third team). Gerard Bryant '10 was a First Team choice in 2009.

"We are very proud of Obi, as he's very deserving of this honor," said St. Lawrence head football coach Mark Raymond. "He's been a great player and a great teammate throughout his time at St. Lawrence and certainly has a great future ahead of him."

The 2013 All-Region teams are presented by Salem, Virginia's Championship City. The teams were selected in balloting by East Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff. A total of 77 players were chosen out of over 280 nominations.

Nwaigwe led the Liberty League in both sacks, tackles for a loss and forced fumbles. The 6'1", 220 pound defensive end, who made 70 total tackles this season, extended his versatility into coverage, where he had three pass break-ups despite facing consistent double-teams. He dominated the line of scrimmage in critical moments, including 5.0 tackles for a loss and 3.0 sacks in St. Lawrence's first win over Rochester since 1998 (14-10). He also added 3.0 or more tackles for a loss against Coast Guard, Norwich and Springfield, and helped St. Lawrence to seven wins in a season for the first time in 31 years.

The D3football.com All-America team will be announced on Friday, Dec. 20, prior to the Stagg Bowl.
