Abby Guthmann's "Girls in the Shambass" won the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Off-Campus Study Photo Contest.

APPLETON, WIS. (01/14/2014)(readMedia)-- Abby Guthmann, a 2010 graduate of Mounds Park Academy, earned Grand Prize honors in the recent Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Off-Campus Study Photo Contest.

A senior majoring in biology at Lawrence University, she is the daughter of John and Teresa Guthmann, St. Paul.

Guthmann's winning photo, "Girls in the Shambass," was selected from among 109 submissions by students participating in off-campus study programs. She shot the photo while hiking through the Usambara Mountains of northern Tanzania during a study abroad program titled "Ecology and Human Origins" at the University of Dar-es-Salaam. The photo depicts two young girls smiling with the rocky terrain visible in the distance.

"Children would often run after us and ask for their pictures to be taken," said Guthmann. "These two followed me through the shambass, hoping to get a few more pictures. After asking if I could take one more, they grinned and clenched their fists with excitement as I took the photo and showed it to them."

Guthmann's winning photograph, for which she was awarded a $200 prize, will be part of a traveling digital photo exhibit at ACM campuses during winter and spring 2014.
