Jason Berggren, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW), is the 2012 recipient of the Professor of the Year Award voted on by the class of 2011. A graduate of Gibbs Senior High School, Berggren is originally from St. Petersburg. His award was presented at Spring Commencement on May 5 in the Student Success Center.

Sponsored by the GSW National Alumni Association, the award covers the faculty member's quality of classroom teaching and performance, dedication to the profession and his or her impact on students through the teaching and learning process.

Aside from his time in the classroom, Berggren serves as a faculty advisor to the GSW Student Government Association. He has also authored and had published numerous scholarly journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers on religion and politics.

Berggren joined the GSW faculty in 2009. He earned a Bachelor of Science in religious studies from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, a Master of Arts in religion at Florida State University and a Ph.D. in political science from the Florida International University.
