State Bar Honors Lillian Moy for Diversity Efforts

ALBANY, NY (01/22/2013)(readMedia)-- Lillian Moy of Albany, executive director of the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, is the recipient of the Diversity Trailblazer Award, given by the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion of the New York State Bar Association.

Moy received her award on January 21 during the State Bar's Annual Meeting in New York City. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to helping enhance diversity in the legal profession.

"Lillian Moy understands that diversity strengthens and enhances our profession and, in turn, our society. She works tirelessly to promote more inclusive work environments throughout New York," said Kenneth G. Standard of New York (Epstein Becker and Green), co-chair of the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and a past president of the State Bar. "We are pleased to honor an effective leader and wonderful ambassador."

Her recruiting and mentoring efforts have helped many attorneys make their mark and inspire others," said Betty Lugo of Brooklyn (Pacheco & Lugo), co-chair of the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion. During Moy's 17-year tenure at the Legal Aid Society, the Legal Aid Society's budget has grown to $5 million from $1.5 million and its staff has increased to 60 employees from 21. From 1989 to 1995, she was the managing attorney/advocacy coordinator for the Legal Assistance Corporation of Central Massachusetts. She was a staff attorney with the Georgia Legal Services Program from 1981 to 1989.

Within the State Bar Association, Moy is vice-president of the 3rd Judicial District. She is a past chair of the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and the Committee on Legal Aid. She is a member of the Membership Committee and the President's Committee on Access to Justice.

Moy is a member of the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defenders, the Advisory Committee on New York State Pro Bono Bar Admission Requirements ,and Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman's Task Force to Expand Access to Civil Legal Services in New York. She is a founding member of the New York State Diversity Coalition and a frequent presenter on management, diversity and cultural competency.

She is a graduate of Hunter College of the City University of New York and Boston University School of Law.

The 76,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.
