State Fair Conserve Crown Claimed By Waterloo Cook

DES MOINES, IA (08/11/2018) (readMedia)-- Michelle Westphal of Waterloo won First Place Overall in the C & H Canned Conserves competition, judged on August 8 prior to the start of the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Martha Kunkle of Carlisle earned Second Place Overall and Rod Zeitler of Iowa City claimed Third Place Overall and the Sweepstakes Award.

Tanya K. Hardy of Osceola earned Reserve Sweepstakes honors.

Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

Conserves are similar to jam in consistency. Conserves generally contain two or more fruits, one of which is usually a citrus fruit. They contain nuts and/or raisins and are flavored to accompany meat and poultry, but may also be used as spreads on bread.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Due to the large number of classes, Food Department judging begins prior to the Fair in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
