State Transportation Head: Don't Plow Snow Onto Roadways

ALBANY, NY (01/08/2010)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Stanley Gee today asked for cooperation from property owners and snow plow operators to help keep roadways clear of snow and ice, urging them not to deposit or stockpile snow on or along highways. Piles of snow are hazardous to pedestrians and motorists. Dumping snow on roadways also violates New York State Motor Vehicle and Traffic Law.

"With the winter season upon us, we ask that people drive with caution and take care not to leave snow and ice they remove on State highways and sidewalks," Commissioner Gee said. "Everyone shares the responsibility of keeping plowed roads clear by not blowing or shoveling snow onto them. These simple steps will go a long way toward helping to assure that motorists and pedestrians have clear roads for safe travel throughout the cold weather."

Snow and ice left on highways creates unsafe driving conditions and other problems, including driving and walking hazards, limited sight distance and poor visibility. Property owners are responsible for ensuring that snow and ice from their properties is not left on state and local roadways.
