DES MOINES, IA (09/04/2018) (readMedia)-- State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald received the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurer's (NASACT) President's Award on August 14. NASACT serves as the premier organization working to bring together state auditors, comptrollers and treasurers to cooperatively address government financial management issues. NASACT hosted their annual conference in Salt Lake City. This award is given at the discretion of the president of NASACT to one state treasurer to recognize service to the Association.

According to NASACT, Fitzgerald received the award for his leadership in administering unclaimed property and college savings plans, his efforts to develop a set of national principles and best practices for retirement security models, and to recognize his service as the elected State Treasurer of Iowa since 1982.

"I'm honored to receive this award from this professional organization," Fitzgerald said. "Over the years I have collaborated with fellow treasurers, auditors and comptrollers to bring best practices back home to Iowa."

Fitzgerald is responsible for managing one of the country's premier 529 plans, College Savings Iowa. Currently, there are over 249,000 College Savings Iowa accounts, representing $4.9 billion invested in the program. Additionally, he started the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt when he took office and through that program has returned over $249 million in unclaimed property to more than 592,000 individuals.
