Statement by Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Darrel J. Aubertine On the Death of Governor Hugh L. Carey

ALBANY, NY (08/09/2011)(readMedia)-- "With the passing of Governor Hugh L. Carey, New York has lost one of the great leaders of our time. In one of the most difficult periods in the state's history he brought together New Yorkers from all walks of life and all political parties to craft a plan to save our state and New York City from bankruptcy. At the Department of Agriculture and Markets, one of his achievements, which we especially appreciate, was his preservation of the Great New York State Fair. His decision to keep that institution has provided enjoyment to millions of families ever since.

As a Commissioner and former legislator, I have the greatest respect for Governor Carey's ability to make government work for the people of New York. He leaves a legacy that will serve as an example of leadership, character and effectiveness that is an example for all of us in government.

My sympathies to his family."
