Statement from Governor David A. Paterson

ALBANY, NY (09/08/2010)(readMedia)-- "As Jews around New York and throughout the world gather with their families to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and the start of the High Holy Days, I want to extend my best wishes for a healthy and sweet new year.

"Rosh Hashanah marks not just the start of another year, but also the beginning of a spiritual journey. As the sounds of the shofar ring out from synagogues and fill our ears, we are jolted to our feet and called to action.

"We are called to take stock of our own lives, right the wrongs of the past year and learn from them, and recommit ourselves to tikun olam-healing the world. At a time when so many New Yorkers are out of work and struggling to provide for their families, this must be our mission.

"We must recognize our faults and do our best to fix them. We must embrace our differences and do our best to honor them. We must acknowledge our limitations and do our best to exceed them. And as always, we must have faith that the judgments of the Lord are righteous and true altogether.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, Michelle and I would like to wish everyone celebrating the new year a Shana Tova Umetukah, and may we all be inscribed in the Book of Life."
