Statement from Governor David A. Paterson

ALBANY, NY (12/22/2010)(readMedia)-- "I am pleased that Congress has reached an agreement on the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. This legislation will provide much-needed funds for medical treatment to the rescue workers and residents of New York City who suffered illnesses from breathing in toxic fumes, dust and smoke from Ground Zero. In addition, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act will reopen the victims' compensation fund for rescue workers who were hurt as a result of the attacks.

"This legislation has been a moral imperative, and I am pleased that Congress agrees that this is not only a priority for New York State, but for our entire country. I commend New York's Congressional Delegation, especially our Senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Representatives Carolyn Maloney and Jerrold Nadler, for their long-standing commitment and leadership on this issue and I look forward to President Obama signing this bill into law."
