Statement from JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger on Democracy and Civic Engagement Ahead of Early Voting in New York

NEW YORK, NY (10/22/2026) (readMedia)-- Statement from Mark Treyger, CEO, Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC-NY):

Our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter can participate freely, safely, and with confidence. As early voting begins this Saturday, we must reaffirm a fundamental American principle that no one should face fear, harassment, discrimination, or intimidation when exercising their right to vote, regardless of their background, identity, or immigration history.

That means safeguarding polling places from intimidation or improper interference by anyone, including those in positions of authority, while ensuring meaningful language access, disability accommodations, and clear, accurate voting information.

As a former civics teacher, I have always believed that democracy is not merely something we teach, but it is something we practice and protect. Jewish New Yorkers, like all communities, deserve to have their voices heard and their concerns represented. That is why nonpartisan civic engagement is central to JCRC-NY's mission. A stronger, safer, more inclusive New York begins with a democracy in which every eligible voter can fully participate.
