STORM LAKE, IA (02/22/2019) (readMedia)-- Buena Vista University's (BVU) student organization, Student MOVE (Mobilizing Outreach & Volunteer Efforts), hosts the annual Glass Slipper Shop on the BVU campus.
The event is open to Storm Lake and area residents in the Geisinger Student Leadership Center in Siebens Forum on the following dates and times:
• Friday, March 1 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
• Saturday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Sunday, March 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Glass Slipper Shop gives community members the opportunity to purchase new and gently used prom dresses and other formal dresses at a lower cost. Approximately 200 dresses of various styles, sizes and colors have been donated by dress shops such as A Heavenly Celebration in Emmetsburg and Stacey's Bridal Shop in Urbandale, as well as BVU students and community members. The dresses may be viewed on Student MOVE's Glass Slipper Shop Facebook page.
"The Glass Slipper Shop is one of Student MOVE's favorite events," says Dr. Ashley Farmer-Hanson, interim vice president of student success and director of civic engagement. "We get to help young women find affordable dresses and make a donation to a great cause in our community. Our students have done an excellent job finding a wide variety of styles and sizes to meet everyone's needs."
"I've helped with the Glass Slipper Shop for two years and will help again because I love it," says Ross, a psychology and social work double major from Council Bluffs. "I love seeing the joy on the faces of parents and students when they find a prom dress they like and can afford. They're so grateful for our efforts in creating a space for affordable dresses.
"I can see how happy and confident the girls are when they find their perfect dress," Ross continues. "I can tell it means a lot."
Glass Slipper Shop proceeds go to Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault (CAASA) in Storm Lake to benefit those in need. Snacks and refreshments are provided during the event.
BVU's Student MOVE organization works to improve lives, foster civic engagement and strengthen the connection between Storm Lake and University communities. It generates opportunities for BVU students to grow and explore their hidden passions through character-building programs such as service-learning, alternative events, and student education.
