AIKEN, SC (03/20/2018) During spring break, some University of South Carolina Aiken students headed to a beach in Florida, but their plans were little different than what is typically expected during this time.

Each year, USC Aiken offers students an alternative spring break. This gives students a chance to get away to a new location during the hiatus. There, they spend their breaks conducting a community outreach project. This year, students traveled to Bill Baggs State Park in Key Biscayne, Fla., near Miami, where they took part in a beach cleanup.

"The students and I were very excited to try something new and be able to help the park from some of the damage it received from the hurricane a few months ago," said Kevin Nolan, assistant director of student life.

"It is very important to volunteer in different communities, and we were very fortunate to be able to work with Bill Baggs State Park this spring."

USC Aiken students regularly volunteer in the Aiken community, and last fall, they worked with the Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans as part of the alternative break for the fall semester.

"We have many great students here at USCA that take time out of their busy schedule to give back to the Aiken community. They all work extremely hard to help.

"For many years now we have been able to give these students an opportunity to volunteer and help other communities as well," Nolan said.

"This is very valuable for both the communities across the country and for the students."
