NORTH READING, MASS (09/02/2010)(readMedia)-- AAA has named the Subaru Forester as one of its top vehicle picks for those who love sharing the great outdoors with a canine friend or two. The Forester joined Hyundai's Santa Fe as the two vehicles recommended in AAA's Active Lifestyle category.
AAA reviewers made their recommendations after driving hundreds of 2010 model-year cars, trucks and SUVs. Reviewers compared vehicles in several areas important to dogs and their humans, including safety features, crash-test ratings, cargo space and interior materials that are easy to clean.
"A nice, long tummy rub is still a dog's favorite thing, but a ride in a Forester is a very close second," said David Vernet, general manager of Massachusetts Subaru dealer North Reading Subaru. "The Forester is a great fit for dogs of any size and, just like your dog, it loves running in the woods."
The Forester scored high marks with AAA for having a lower rear tailgate than many vehicles, which makes it easy for older dogs to get in and out. AAA also praised the 68 cubic feet of cargo capacity, enough room for a Golden or Boxer to stretch out, and the tie-off points that make it easy to secure a crate.
The added traction of all-wheel drive and the smooth response of the Forester make the road a little less scary for dogs who prefer the hearth to the highway. The sure-footed Forester can also handle gentle off-road trails, allowing owner and dog to get deeper into the woods for less time on the leash and more time on the loose.
Along with the recommendation from AAA come some cautions. In a recent survey, AAA found that 21% of dog owners have a pet in their lap while their hands are on the wheel, a practice that could lead to a dangerous distraction on the road. AAA strongly recommends keeping pets restrained in a car, to reduce the risk of injury to pets and people in the event of a crash. Only 17% of dog owners regularly use a restraint when dogs are in the car.
"Massachusetts Subaru owners have some amazing local destinations to explore with their dogs, from Sheepfold in the Middlesex Fells to Harold Parker State Forest in North Andover," Vernet said. "Taking a Forester to your dog's favorite places just adds to the fun."
