Subaru Now the Fastest-Growing Car Brand in America
Resale Value, Quality Appeal to Cash-Conscious Consumers
BOSTON, MASS (06/15/2010)(readMedia)-- If you have bought a Subaru in the last two years, you are not alone. Subaru's sales in April 2010 were up 48% over April of 2009, and the automaker has posted the fastest growth among all major car brands in the United States over the last two years.
Subaru is now outselling every European car manufacturer in the United States, including Volkswagen. U.S. sales of Subaru cars and trucks in April also exceeded those of Japanese rivals Mitsubishi and Mazda, putting Subaru on the threshold of becoming a top 10 car brand in the United States.
"Customers who want value and dependability are giving Subaru a look, and they love what they see," said Sean Ternullo, General Manager of Quirk Works Subaru, a premier Greater Boston Subaru dealer in Braintree, MA. "In these tough economic times, people want to get the most out of their car purchase. Subaru's strategy has been to reduce the sticker price without sacrificing quality, and that's won over a lot of customers."
Award-winning vehicles like the Subaru Forester have acquired a dedicated following. Since 1997, the Forester has won more awards than any other small SUV, including highest customer loyalty and highest resale value in its class. The Forester added to its list of accolades with the 2010 model, receiving a five-star crash rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a Top Safety Rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
New England was an early supporter of the Subaru brand, thanks to the durability of its cars and available all-wheel drive on every model; a necessity for coping with the slick, unpredictable driving conditions of winter.
"For a long time, Subaru's market was here in New England and in the Northwest, where you've got tough, steep roads and challenging weather," Ternullo explained. "We're not surprised that the rest of America has discovered how reliable and fun a Subaru can be."
On a percentage basis, Subaru sales have been stronger than those of America's top automakers. Since the start of 2010, overall Subaru sales have grown by 41%. By comparison, Ford, the number-two brand in the United States, had a sales increase of 34% since the start of the year, while General Motors saw an increase of only 14%.
The Subaru Impreza and Subaru Legacy contributed to strong growth in the domestic car category, with sales up 113% since the start of 2010. Volkswagen was the only manufacturer to compete in this category, which measures sales of cars made in the United States, growing sales by a distant 44%.
"The prices get the attention of car shoppers, but it's the quality that convinces them to buy," Ternullo said. "Subaru has developed a tradition of excellence that Massachusetts Subaru shoppers are well-aware of when they enter our dealership."
