Successful Alumni, Scholarship Recipients in Spotlight at GCC's Annual Discover the Stars Reception

BATAVIA, NY (08/12/2014)(readMedia)-- Genesee Community College students who have been awarded scholarships from the College Foundation will have the opportunity to meet with graduates who have excelled in their careers and the donors who help make college dreams a reality.

Discover the Stars is an annual event that brings together GCC scholarship recipients and donors. Members of the College Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, and College administrators will also be present. The reception will take place on Monday, September 8, 2014 from 5 - 7 pm in the Stuart Steiner Theatre on the GCC Batavia campus.

This year's alumni speakers are Jessica Stabell (class of 2007) and Daniel Ireland (class of 1992).

Jessica Stabell graduated from GCC in 2007 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from Buffalo State College where she received the President's Medal for Outstanding Undergraduate Student in 2013 and delivered the student address at two commencement ceremonies. Jessica is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Forensic Entomology. She is described as "a focused researcher, able to organize and complete challenging projects in a timely manner." In 2012, she earned an Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship to study the effects of temperature on decomposition in Western New York using the method of accumulated degree-days. The significance of the research was highlighted in a report on WKBW-TV when she was named Channel 7's Person of the Week in May 2013. Dan Ireland is president of United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the nation's leading professional society for healthcare leaders. Dan began his career at UMMC while still a student at GCC. He worked as an orderly beginning in 1990. Dan's exceptional work propelled him to the medical/surgical unit where he became a floor nurse. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from SUNY Brockport in 1994 and an MBA from RIT in 1997. Dan continued his career at UMMC, becoming an IT clinical analyst, then an administrative analyst. In 2004, he was named director of Quality Management. His work guiding that department earned him a promotion to vice president of Clinical Support Services and then vice president of Operations. Dan, his wife Amy and their three children make their home in Byron, NY.
