Buildings along Lower Main Street in Callicoon would be eligible for incentives for historic rehabilitation if the National Register District nomination is successful.

ALBANY, NY (12/17/2014)(readMedia)-- The Preservation League of New York State recently made a grant of $4,200 to support the cost of completing National Register Historic District nomination for the Hamlet of Callicoon in Sullivan County.

This charming community, population 167 in the 2010 census, is located where the Callicoon Creek enters the Delaware River and is part of the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River Corridor. The hamlet grew in the 19th century, when lumber transport via the Delaware River and Erie Railroad helped expand the community. Due to a late 19th century fire, most of the hamlet's buildings date to the late 19th and early 20th century, although several early 19th century houses remain up the hill from Main Street. Callicoon's Main Street is divided into upper and lower sections, split by the railroad, which passes straight down Main Street.

All of the buildings within the survey area fall within a New York State Rehabilitation Tax Credit-eligible census tract. Historic District designation would open doors for financial incentives for rehabilitation of commercial and residential properties. Preservation consulting firm Larson Fisher Associates will complete the survey.

Town Historian Cindy Herbert stated, "The Preserve New York Grant will open the doors to help the town continue to maintain its prior preservation work and open up new doors to enhance the character, charm and rich history of its downtown."

The Preserve New York Grant Program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. "With the announcement of the 2014 awards, the total support provided by Preserve New York since its launch in 1993 is over $1.9 million to 307 projects statewide," said Jay DiLorenzo, president of the Preservation League. "Preserve New York has a strong track record of bolstering local preservation efforts and delivering a strong return on investment."

"At its August, 2014 meeting, the Preserve New York grant program panel selected 15 applicants in 12 counties around the state to share $100,000 in funding," said Erin Tobin, the League's Regional Director of Technical and Grant Programs in eastern New York. "As always, the competition for these funds was intense. The Preservation League is delighted to help advance the preservation efforts of the Town of Delaware with timely funding from Preserve New York."
