Surviving the Holidays: Safe Horizon's Tips for Survivors of DV, Childhood Sexual Abuse + Gun Violence

Videos and Tip Sheet on Facebook and SafeHorizon.org

NEW YORK (12/18/2019) (readMedia)-- Safe Horizon - the nation's leading victims services provider - has compiled a collection of tips for survivors of domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, and gun violence to take care of themselves during the holidays. This time of year can be incredibly difficult for survivors as many will be sharing a table with abusers or family and friends who may not support them. The tips include videos of survivors and Safe Horizon staff as well as lists and graphics posted on Facebook and Safe Horizon's website.

"We care deeply about the well-being and healing of survivors and recognize that the holiday season can be a challenging time of year as they cope with the trauma of their abuse," said Ariel Zwang, Safe Horizon CEO. "We prioritize having resources available for survivors to feel supported and hope that these tools will be helpful in providing some comfort during this time."

The tips include ways to manage trauma and set boundaries.

  • Take a walk
  • Take deep breaths
  • Take time for yourself
  • It's ok to limit the time you spend with friends and family
  • Start new traditions
  • Spend time with people who make you feel happy, hopeful and less alone

The Holiday Tips emphasize taking time for yourself and setting boundaries so that this time of year is less triggering for survivors.
