ANNVILLE, PA (08/20/2014)(readMedia)-- Lebanon Valley College's Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery will present "Intersection: Painting, Drawing, and Photography" Aug. 29 to Oct. 12 in the first exhibit of its 20th anniversary season. A special Opening Reception will be held Friday, Sept. 5 from 5 -7 p.m. hosted by President Lewis Evitts Thayne, LVC president, and Dorothy Thayne.

This exhibition will examine the history of the complex intersection of painting and photography. In particular, the genres of portraiture and landscape will demonstrate how the two mediums have impacted each other from the mid-19th century to the present. In the 19th century, artists such as Fitz Henry Lane, Thomas Eakins, and Edgar Degas used photography to support their painting process, while photographers such as Peter Henry Emerson and Edward Steichen attempted to elevate photography to an art form. In the 20th century photo-realists such as Chuck Close and Ralph Goings were directly inspired by the unique vision of the camera.

American University's Dr. Sarah Gordon will present a lecture, "'The Rich Gifts it Bestows': Exchanges Among Photography, Painting, and Drawing," on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. in Zimmerman Recital Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The Gallery will commemorate its 20th Anniversary with a celebration on Friday, Sept. 26 from 5-7 p.m. in Zimmerman Recital Hall. The program includes refreshments, a panel discussion with former Gallery directors led by moderator Dr. Grant Taylor, associate professor of art history, and music by Lebanon Valley College music major Chris Costanza of Rehrersburg.

Pre-registration is requested for the Sept. 5 Opening Reception and Sept. 26 Anniversary Celebration. Opening Reception admission is free for Gallery members and $10 for non-members; Anniversary Celebration admission is free. Commemorative programs will be available for purchase. Gallery hours are Wednesdays from 5-8 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 1-4:30 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and by appointment for groups.
