ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (11/10/2011)(readMedia)-- As part of the Elizabethtown College Inaugural Scholarship Lecture Series Catherine Lemley, Elizabethtown College professor of Psychology and Department of Psychology chair, talks about synesthesia -- a fascinating phenomenon in which one sense is triggered by another -- at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Hoover 212. A reception follows the discussion.

"An Evening with Catherine Lemley -- Tasty Colors and Colored Sounds: What synesthesia can tell us about brain plasticity" explores the experiences of synesthetes, who might hear sounds in response to smell, see colors when they hear words or feel geometric shapes in response to taste.

Currently Dr. Lemley is using fMRI and behavioral testing to investigate the role of synesthesia in cognitive function (i.e. working memory, attention) along with its implications for brain plasticity (response properties of neurons shaped by experience) and rehabilitation. Lemley earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Columbus College and her master's and doctoral degrees in experimental psychology from Northeastern University.
