Syracuse resident Adam Szymaniak honored with Chancellor's Award

OSWEGO, NY (04/24/2013)(readMedia)--  SUNY Oswego senior biochemistry major Adam Szymaniak of Syracuse is the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, the highest student recognition through the statewide university system.

Szymaniak has worked on four major research projects, submitting for peer-reviewed publication a paper on drug synthesis and presenting his work at five regional and national conferences, including the American Chemical Society's Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The Chemistry Club president tutored groups of chemistry students, volunteered with the Adopt-a-Grandparent program, assisted mentor Fehmi Damkaci of the chemistry faculty with GENIUS Olympiad organization, exhibited scholarly work at Quest and the Summer Scholars Research Symposium and played piano for the College-Community Orchestra and College Hour.

Earning numerous academic and research awards, Szymaniak also completed a medical internship at Oswego Hospital. He plans to enroll in a Ph.D. program in organic or medicinal chemistry.

Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News named it among the "Top 20 Public Regional Universities in the North" for 2013, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its 2013 college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges" and named the college to its 2013 list of "Best Value Colleges."

A 152-year-old comprehensive college in the State University of New York system, Oswego enrolls about 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; and School of Education.
