Tailgating Gets Serious in State Fair Competition

DES MOINES, IA (09/14/2018) (readMedia)-- Matthew Phoenix from Ankeny takes tailgating very serious walking away with First place and a $300 cash award in the Tailgating Treats for My Team competition judged Saturday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Holly Houg of Urbandale claimed second place and $200 while Anita Van Gundy took home third place and $100. The judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Jessica Denner from Polk City.

Entries were judged on suitability for tailgating, presentation, and taste.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
