ALLIANCE, OH (01/04/2011)(readMedia)-- Tamara Daily, Ph.D., chair of the department of psychology and psychology professor at the University of Mount Union, received the Award for Innovation from the Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation. A resident of Canton, Ohio, Daily was recognized for innovative teaching that tries to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness.

She created and teaches the popular course, Movies and Madness, which explores the ways people with mental illnesses and psychological disorders as well as those who treat them have been presented in feature films. The course examines the issue of stigmatization and marginalization of people with mental illness as a social problem exacerbated by misleading and negative images presented in the mass media. The course focuses on psychological disorders, the mental health system and various treatment approaches.

Her research interests include the stigma associated with people with mental illness, the use of first-person narratives in teaching psychology, stakeholder perceptions of access to the mental health system and mindfulness.

A member of the Mount Union faculty since 1993, Daily earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University. She also earned a Master of Arts degree and a doctoral degree in psychology, both from University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Daily is a member of the American Psychological Society and the Midwestern Psychological Association.

The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation was established by Burt Morgan in honor of his wife. It was constructed to better the lives of individuals fighting severe mental illness, and supports the promotion of mental wellness, the arts and education.
