Tax Department Provides Online And Call-In Customer Service For 1099-G Information

ALBANY, NY (01/29/2010)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Jamie Woodward announced today that the Department will supply 1099-G state income tax information online at the Department's website and through dedicated call-in telephone numbers.

The Department will no longer be mailing Form 1099-G, Statement for Recipients of State Income Tax Refunds, to taxpayers.

This initiative is expected to save $700,000 in mail and print costs and will only affect taxpayers who itemized deductions last year and received a refund.

If you itemized deductions on your 2008 federal income tax return, you may be required to include all or a portion of any New York State tax refund(s) you received in 2009 as income on your 2009 federal income tax return. For most people, the amount on the 1099-G is the same as the New York State income tax refund the taxpayer actually received.

Taxpayers can receive their 1099-G information from New York State online at www.nystax.gov or call (518) 485-0799 (in-state callers without free long distance call 1-866-698-2946). At the web service site, taxpayers can enter individual verifiable information and print their 1099-G.

"So far response has been very positive" Acting Commissioner Woodward said. "We are receiving compliments from those who have tried our online service."

Acting Commissioner Woodward added, "We know taxpayers are increasingly accessing online tools in order to help file their taxes. Today, nearly 95% of New York taxpayers either file their returns electronically or use tax forms produced by computer software or downloaded from the Department's website. The 1099-G online service is simple and easy to follow and a helpful tool for all taxpayers and tax practitioners."

For 1099-G information and all other New York State tax forms, please visit the Department's website at www.nystax.gov. The most commonly used forms and instructions are also available at most local libraries.
