The Art Museum at SUNY Potsdam Features Works by High School Student Artists from 12 Districts

POTSDAM, NY (05/31/2016)(readMedia)-- The Art Museum at SUNY Potsdam will feature winning works by students from 12 districts across the region, with the debut of the 2016 St. Lawrence County High School Art Show.

The Roland Gibson Gallery will display artworks by students from participating districts, including Clifton-Fine, Colton-Pierrepont, Edwards-Knox, Heuvelton, Lisbon, Madrid-Waddington, Massena, Norwood-Norfolk, Ogdensburg Free Academy, Parishville-Hopkinton, Potsdam and Salmon River high schools.

There will be an opening reception tomorrow night, Wednesday, June 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Gibson Gallery. The exhibition will be on display through Friday, June 17. Admission to the museum is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The juror for this show is SUNY Potsdam Professor of Art F. Douglass Schatz. There will be five monetary awards and four honorable mention awards presented during the reception, including the SUNY Potsdam Art Department Award of Excellence and awards in the categories of photography, 3-D art, painting and works on paper.

The Art Museum at SUNY Potsdam serves as the center for visual arts at the College, and encompasses all of the collections found throughout campus, including in the Gibson Gallery. The Museum is dedicated to the exhibition and interpretation of quality works of art, and its collection includes significant artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as earlier pieces. The mission of The Art Museum at The State University of New York at Potsdam is to make direct experience of the visual arts accessible to students, faculty, staff and alumni of the College and to residents of Northern New York.

Admission to the Gibson Gallery, located at Brainerd Hall, is free, and the exhibition space is handicapped-accessible. The Art Museum is open to the public from noon until 5 p.m. on Monday and Friday, from noon until 7 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday, and from noon until 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
