Cygnets and their proud parents

STAUNTON, VA (05/09/2011)(readMedia)-- The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department breathed a collective sigh of relief as the Duck Pond swans successfully hatched two swan babies, known as cygnets, at the Gypsy Hill Park Duck Pond. It was appropriate that the cygnets were born on Mother's Day in the nest that the parent swans had carefully constructed and tended under the Weeping Willow tree on Duck Pond Island. Parks Department caretakers had kept a close eye on the nest as the swan parents tended the unhatched eggs. This was their first brood as the fairly new swans, which were purchased about two years ago with money raised via Duck Pond Day (a community event ), turned the Duck Pond into a maternity ward abuzz with the onlooking proud community.

After hatching, the cygnets didn't stay in the nest long. On Monday, a day after hatching, they were off and swimming with their parents and searching for food in the Duck Pond. We have attached a picture of the happy swan family. Just a reminder to the Duck Pond visitors, please do not feed the ducks, swans or cygnets bread as it is not a healthy food source.
