ALBANY, NY (02/20/2012)(readMedia)-- Pastor Charlie Muller, District Attorney David Soares and Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple will be working together in implementing an new program aimed at prisoners in Albany County. The new program will be much like the nationwide program, Project Safe Neighborhoods . Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) is a nationwide commitment to reduce gun and gang crime in America by networking existing local programs that target gun and gun crime and providing these programs with additional tools necessary to be successful. Since its inception in 2001, approximately $2 billion has been committed to this initiative.
The Enough Program which is currently running the very successful Gun Buy-Back program will look to increase its presence in the community through this new program. "The intent of this initiative is to mirror the very successful Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) currently working throughout the country". We will be working with the prisoners helping them to understand what impact their actions have on their families and the community". Pastor Charlie "We are excited about this new program and the affect it will have in our neighborhoods", "I firmly believe that this program along with the other Anti-Violence programs and events through the ENOUGH Program will help deter gun violence in our County".
The goal of the Enough Program is to help reduce incidences of gun violence in some of Albany County's most afflicted neighborhoods. This can be accomplished through a multi-faceted approach that includes law enforcement, intervention and prevention strategies. Through the ENOUGH Program, we will carry out these strategies through the development of partnerships amongst Federal, State and Local government as well as community and faith-based providers. This strategy is designed to prevent youth from committing a gun crime; intervene in the lives of those individuals struggling to re-integrate into society following release from prison. We will look to help those currently in prison become effective and productive members of their community upon release with a program called "Exit Stratgey" starting April 3rd in Albany County Jail. With the implementation of Exit Strategy we will be helping to stop violence and stop repeat offenders. This will also help Pastor Charlie and the ENOUGH Program better track how illegal guns are coming to our County.
Pastor Charlie, David Soares and Craig apple will be holding a press conference the week of February 27 to give further details. A date for the press conference will follow. For additional Information, please call Mark Pratt at: 573-8712
