STAUNTON, VA (07/16/2013)(readMedia)-- Teens and young adults are invited to attend this multi-faceted event which takes place on Saturday, July 20 at the Gypsy Hill Park Lake Tams/Skate Park area from 3pm-9pm. The Gypsy Project encourages freedom of expression, boundless creativity and is unique in that....three youth serving organizations have come together to collaborate on this event: Staunton Parks & Recreation Department with co-sponsors Central Shenandoah Valley Office on Youth and Boys & Girls Club of Waynesboro, Staunton and Augusta County. The idea came to fruition during discussions about Operation 'B' Sting, an event involving skateboarding and band competitions. After 10 years, event participation began to dwindle, so organizers decided that this new, all-encompassing event would be a better option for teens.
Teens and young adults are invited to showcase their artwork, craft or photography during the art show which will be on display all day. There will be a collaborative and interactive art project called 'Before I Die...' which is similar to a one-item bucket list where participants can share one thing they really want to accomplish in their lifetimes. The Beverley Street Studio School will be present doing portraits, cartoon sketches and chair massages which represent careers in art.
Entertainment will be provided throughout the day and includes youthful acts such as Sarah Lynna and the Misfit Toys, Joseph Lombard, Elite Martial Arts Karate Demonstrations, other local talent and Fata Morgana Bellydance Troupe. Queen City Fire Circus will round out the evening with a fire hoop show. Activities throughout the day will include Flower Pounding, Tie Dying and a smattering of our 'Rec Your Life' equipment such as Tug-of-War, Corn Hole, Ladder Golf, and Hula Hoops.
Admission to this event is FREE, although we are trying to "Stuff the Truck" for the Valley Mission and encourage folks to bring gently used items such as household goods, clothes, coats, linens, etc. The Mission is also currently in need of laundry soap, cleaning supplies and paper products. In addition to these items, canned goods will also be accepted. The *BONUS* part to this feel-good social cause, is for each item donated, participants will receive one entry into the drawing for a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, valued at $175. Comment cards will be available, and filling one out will automatically put participants in the running for cool door prizes.
Food vendors will be onsite and include Gloria's Pupuseria (a popular regular at the Staunton Farmer's Market), Greenies (boasting a creative local vegetarian menu) and the ever-appealing Shenandoah Pizza. Kona Ice from Charlottesville will also be there to cool everyone off with icy treats.
Organizers are excited about Saturday's event and welcome all to enjoy the activities in this fun and safe environment. Teens/Young adults are encouraged to bring a tent, chair or blanket and enjoy a relaxing laid back atmosphere! Park and local laws apply!
