Thirty-three Outstanding Scholars in Genesee's Advanced Studies Program Receive Awards
BATAVIA, NY (06/08/2009)(readMedia)-- Thirty-three students in Genesee Community College's Advanced Studies program were finalists for Outstanding Scholar Awards. The awardees were announced at a ceremony and reception on Wednesday, June 3, in the Stuart Steiner Theatre at Genesee's Batavia campus.
Advanced Studies is part of the College's ACE program, or Accelerated College Enrollment, and allows high school students the opportunity to earn college credit from Genesee while attending class within their high school. High school teachers approved as Genesee adjunct faculty teach all Advanced Studies courses. Some of the most enterprising young students earn enough transferable Advanced Studies credit to enter their first year of college as sophomores.
"Having thirty more students involved in the Outstanding Scholars program this year over last year illustrates how families are recognizing the value of earning college credit while still in high school. The growing number of Outstanding Scholars reflects the growing realization about the importance of making the most out of every high school term," Ed Levinstein, Associate Dean of the ACE Program said. "It not only gives students an academic edge in their freshmen college year, but it can save their families significant tuition dollars." The 33 finalists were selected from 78 semi-finalists in the five subject areas of mathematics, science, social science, foreign language, and English. In 2008, there were 24 finalists and 48 semi-finalists. Like last year, a committee of academic professionals from Genesee Community College selected the following award winners, listed by subject area, county of residence and their high school:
