Three Join Lebanon Valley College Board of Trustees; Two Complete Terms

Gregory High will be joining the Lebanon Valley College Board of Trustees.

ANNVILLE, PA (05/19/2016)(readMedia)-- Wesley T. Dellinger '75, P'05, chair of the Lebanon Valley College Board of Trustees, announced that the board has appointed Gregory A. High '92, Dr. Katie Oriel, and Rebecca "Becca" Whalen '18 to serve effective July 1, 2016. Dellinger also announced that Jeffrey A. Bates '16 and Dr. Ken Yarnall complete their board duties on June 30, 2016.

"Dr. Yarnall and Mr. Bates served the board admirably in their respective roles as faculty and student representatives," noted Dellinger. "Dr. Yarnall's knowledge and expertise as chair and associate professor of mathematical sciences, and Jeff's perspective as a double major in early childhood and special education, were invaluable to the board in many regards."

New Trustees

Gregory A. High '92 graduated cum laude from Lebanon Valley College with a B.S. in hotel, restaurant, and institutional management. He received the Achievement Scholarship Award in Management as an undergraduate and was a member of the College's radio station, WLVC.

Today, High is vice president and an owner of the High companies headquartered in Lancaster, Pa. He is part of the third generation to work in the family firm. High's vast experiences during more than 22 years at the company range from manufacturing to real estate. His most recent attention has been focused on ownership and management succession.

High has worked closely with family members, the chair of the board, the boards of directors, and executive management to restructure successfully the governance structure of the company as part of the family's 100-year vision. He is past chair and current treasurer of The S. Dale High Family Foundation, his family's non-profit philanthropic organization.

Dr. Katie Oriel is an associate professor of physical therapy at LVC and immediate past chair of the College's Faculty Steering Committee. She earned her B.S. and M.P.T. from the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, and her Ed.D. from Idaho State University. She teaches pediatric physical therapy, motor development/motor control, and health promotion for self and society at The Valley.

Dr. Oriel's research interests include the impact of community-based fitness programs on children with disabilities, exercise in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and health promotion across the lifespan. Her clinical practice area is pediatrics, specifically Early Intervention.

Becca Whalen '18 will join Vidya Lala '17 as student representatives on the board for a two-year term. Whalen, from Carlisle, Pa., is a politics major with minors in business administration and law and society. She is sophomore class president, a Student Government Sustainability Committee representative, and a Peer Mentor.

A member of the College's swimming team, Whalen also serves as a tutor in LVC's Center for Writing and Tutoring Resources. She is an active community volunteer who recently received the College's Bronze award for community service.

Completed Terms

Jeffrey A. Bates '16 completes his two-year term as a student representative to the board and graduated in May with degrees in early childhood and special education. During his board tenure, he served on the Academic and Student Affairs, Finance and Administration, Advancement, and Marketing and Enrollment committees.

An active student, Bates is president of the Class of 2016, and served as a Resident Assistant and member of the Class of 2016 Gift Drive Committee. He received The Dowland-Martin Memorial Scholarship and was a Presidential Scholar. Bates was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Dean's List. Last year, he was one of just 24 LVC students to receive the Gold Community Service Award, which requires recipients to donate 100 qualified hours of service and complete a minimum three-day, residential, group-oriented service project.

Dr. Ken Yarnall completes his three-year term as a faculty representative to the Board of Trustees, where he served on the Finance and Administration Committee, as well as on the Facilities Committee.

Dr. Yarnall, associate professor of mathematics and computer science, is chair of the department of mathematical sciences, where he and his colleagues have recently completed a multi-year effort to design the College's new computer & data science and analytical finance majors. During his 20 years at LVC, Dr. Yarnall has been deeply involved in faculty governance. He is also advisor to LVC's successful competitive programming teams.

Well known for his interdisciplinary work across campus and for his collaborative research with his students, Dr. Yarnall has received several awards and grants, including a Dr. E.H. Arnold H'87 and Dr. Jeanne Donlevy Arnold H'08 Grant in 2012.

Dr. Yarnall received a B.S. in mathematics from South Carolina College (the Honors College of the University of South Carolina). He received his Ph.D., also in mathematics, from the University of South Carolina. Prior to LVC, Dr. Yarnall taught at Rhodes College in Tennessee and at the College of William and Mary in Virginia.
