Thruway Authority to Continue Tappan Zee Bridge Deck Replacement Project

ALBANY, NY (09/30/2009)(readMedia)-- The New York State Thruway Authority announced that the schedule for the deck replacement work on the Tappan Zee Bridge has been revised for the remainder of the week of September 28, 2009

On Wednesday, September 30 through Friday, October 2, the contractor will continue the installation of the main span joints in the center lanes.

On Saturday, October 3 the contractor will place concrete in the southbound joints in the two right lanes at joint 173 and L44.

All work is weather-dependent and subject to change.

Updates will be issued announcing any change in schedule. Lane closures during this operation:

Wednesday, September 30

Work will begin at 8 p.m. resulting in the closure of two left southbound lanes, with an additional left southbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another left southbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least one lane southbound and 2 lanes northbound will be opened to traffic from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

These lane closures are for the installation of new deck joints in the center lanes of the main span. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. the following day.

Thursday, October 1

Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two left southbound lanes, with an additional left southbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another left southbound lane closing at 11 p.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least one lane southbound and 2 lanes northbound will be opened to traffic from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

These lane closures are for the installation of new deck joints in the center lanes of the main span. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. the following day.

During Wednesday through Thursday nights' operations, due to the southbound lane closures, the southbound entrance at Interchange 10 will be closed and southbound traffic will be detoured on a posted detour route through Nyack to the entrance to the southbound roadway at Route 59 near Interchange 11.

In addition, two left lanes in the northbound direction from Interchange 8 to milepost 13 will be closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. as part of this work.

Due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. All traffic will be detoured to the entrance ramp from Route 119.

Friday, October 2

Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two left southbound lanes, with an additional left southbound lane closing at 10 p.m., and another left southbound lane closing at 1 a.m., until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least one lane southbound and 2 lanes northbound will be opened to traffic from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Saturday, October 3

Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right southbound lanes, with an additional right southbound lane closing at 11 p.m., and an additional right at 1 am until 8 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least one lane southbound and two lanes northbound will be opened to traffic from 1 a.m. until 7 a.m.

These lane closures are for the completion of new bridge joints in the southbound lanes of the main span and the placement of concrete headers in the right two lanes of the southbound joints at 173 and L44. All lanes are expected to be open by 9 a.m. the following day.

During Saturday nights' operations, due to the southbound lane closures, the southbound entrance at Interchange 10 will be closed and southbound traffic will be detoured on a posted detour route through Nyack to the entrance to the southbound roadway at Route 59 near Interchange 11.

For the safety of the public and construction workers, motorists are urged to proceed with caution and obey posted work-zone speed limits. Work will proceed weather-permitting, and schedule updates will be announced as needed.

Traffic updates will be broadcast to motorists via Dynamic Message Signs along the highway and by Highway Advisory Radio, 530 AM in the Tappan Zee Bridge corridor, as well as 1610 AM in the Newburgh area.

Weather permitting, the deck replacement project is slated for completion in the Fall of 2009.
