ASHLAND, OH (03/19/2013)(readMedia)-- Toledo resident and Ashland University football player, Donnie Dottei, was one of two Ashland University students to receive the Fall 2012 Meijer GLIAC Commissioner's Award.

Dottei is the son of Donald and Alice Dottei of Toledo. He is a 2008 graduate of Whitmer Senior High School and is majoring in integrated mathematics and actuarial science at Ashland University.

The awards, sponsored by Meijer Inc., are presented after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play. All grade point averages are based on a 4.0 scale.

"It is with great pleasure that I offer congratulations on behalf of the GLIAC to our 12 award winners," said GLIAC Commissioner Dell Robinson. "The accomplishments of the 12 student-athletes are a shining example of the future leaders and individuals who serve as change agents on our campuses. I would like to thank Meijer for their continued support that allows the GLIAC to honor our top student-athletes.

Dottei, a senior, was the leader in the secondary this year for an AU team that ended the regular season ranked fourth in the nation. The 2012 team won the first GLIAC football championship in school history and reached the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Dottei ended the year with 51 tackles (31 solo) and two interceptions. He was an honorable mention All-GLIAC pick. In 2011, he led the team in interceptions (five) and was ninth on the team in tackles (40/25 solo).

Dottei is a two-time All-GLIAC Academic Excellence selection. He has a 3.74 grade point average. In 2012, he was a Capital One first team Academic All-American. Dottei was named AU's Outstanding Mathematics Student as a sophomore and junior. He is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and has been inducted into the Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society.
