Traditional Shortening Featured in Fair Baking Contest
DES MOINES, IA (08/17/2017) (readMedia)-- Bakers from across the state brought their best baked goods to Des Moines for the Make It With Lard competition, judged Tuesday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
In 14 different classes of baked goods judged, lard was the only shortening that could be used.
Molly Thomas of Centerville won the Sweepstakes award. Judy Kiburz-Harrison of Tingley claimed the Reserve Sweepstakes honors.
Entries were judged on taste, texture, appearance and best use of lard.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
