Traditional Shortening Used In State Fair Winning Cookies

DES MOINES, IA (08/15/2018) (readMedia)-- Brian Keul of West Des Moines won first place and a $30 cash award in the Make It with Lard competition, judged Tuesday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Diane Rauh of Des Moines claimed second place and $20. Sue Baty of Des Moines earned third place and $10.

Judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville.

Entrants were challenged to create an award worthy cookie that use lard as the only shortening used in the recipe.

Entries were judged on taste, texture, appearance and best use of lard.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
