WHAT: Brigadier General (Ret.) Julia J. Cleckley, the first African American female General of the line, will be the keynote speaker at the Illinois National Guard’s events in honor of Women’s Equality Day.

NOTES: Julia J. Cleckley began her military career in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and spent 28 years in the active Army National Guard. She was the first African American female named General of the line and became the first woman assigned as the Chief, Human Resources Officer for Army National Guard. She also served as a Department of Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee member where she provided advice to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on administration of benefits and services for minority veterans. She is the former chair of the Army National Guard Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Committee. General Cleckley is the recipient of many honors including the Distinguished Service Medal and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Roy Wilkins Renowned Service Award. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and education from Hunter College and her Master’s in human resources management from Golden Gate University.
