Transgender Day of Remembrance in Glens Falls, November 18

GLENS FALLS, NY (11/08/2012)(readMedia)-- Sunday, November 18th, theTransgender Day of Remembrance brings together North Country clergy, elected officials, health care providers, educators, the arts community, and LGBT individuals and allies to raise awarenss about gender-related violence and support transgender equality to help end discrimination that transgender individuals experience in employment, housing, public accommodations, and lending transactions.

The event begins with a brief discussion and candle light vigil at Crandall Library in Glens Falls 3:30-5:00 p.m. The event features a panel of speakers from the community, a time for remembrance and reading of names, and information on proposed New York state legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression. The event concludes with a reception at LARAC, the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council.

• 3:30-5:00 p.m. brief program and candlelight vigil at Crandall Library located at 251 Glen Street to memorialize those who have died in the past year as a result of gender-motivated violence.

• Reception to follow at Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC) located at 7 Lapham Place.

• This event encourages support of Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression. This legislation seeks to add the category of "gender identity or expression" to the current New York state's Human Rights law.
