"To claim your funds, search the name of your business or organization at GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov," added Fitzgerald. "The site is secure, easy to use and completely free." Fitzgerald created the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt in 1983 to help reunite unclaimed property to its rightful owners. Unclaimed property refers to any financial asset, such as checking and savings accounts, stocks, life insurance premiums, uncashed checks, security deposit refunds and the contents of safe deposit boxes, that has been separated from its owner. After a period of inactivity, the property is turned over to the State Treasurer's Office for safekeeping.

"We are holding over $400 million in unclaimed property, and it all rightfully belongs to current or past Iowans," stated Fitzgerald. "It has always been my mission to return these funds, and the work is made even more rewarding when the funds are given back to small businesses and nonprofits who use it to improve our communities. If you know someone on the list, pass the word along!"
