Treasurer Fitzgerald's Great Iowa Treasure Hunt Prepares for Fall Publication
DES MOINES, IA (08/18/2021) (readMedia)-- State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald is preparing to launch the upcoming Great Iowa Treasure Hunt fall publication list. The soon-to-be-published list will contain the most recent names of past and present Iowans who have unclaimed property waiting for them in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt.
"What many people may not realize is anyone can have unclaimed property and losing track of money is quite common," said Fitzgerald. "Have you ever wondered what happened to that old stock certificate grandpa bought when you were born? Or the security deposit you paid for your first apartment? Search your name to see if it's waiting for you in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt!"
Since Fitzgerald created it in 1983, the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program has returned over $304 million in unclaimed property to more than 574,000 individuals. Unclaimed property refers to money and other assets held by financial institutions or companies that have lost contact with the property's owner for a specific period of time. State law requires these institutions and companies to annually report unclaimed property to the State Treasurer's Office, where it is held in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt until the owner or heir of the property is found. Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility security deposits and safe deposit box contents.
