Trevecca Announces Four to Athletic Hall of Fame

Mariano Monzu, Jennifer Perkins, Eric Price, Jackie Weaver

NASHVILLE, TN (11/01/2012)(readMedia)--  NASHVILLE – Four former Trevecca Trojan athletes will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame Saturday November 3, 2012, during Homecoming weekend.

Mariano Monzu (Soccer), Jennifer Perkins (Softball), Eric Price (Basketball), and Jackie Weaver (Basketball) will be honored for their achievements on the playing field. Their induction will take place at halftime of the women's basketball game. The game starts at 3 PM. A reception for all hall of fame members, past and present, will take place in the Fireside Room of the Center for Leadership, Calling, and Service immediately following the induction ceremony.

Monzu, a 2004 graduate, is only the second men's soccer player to be inducted in the Hall of Fame. The other Mauricio Azevedo Dos Santos, was inducted a year ago. Monzu, the first TNU soccer player to be named to the NAIA All-American team, was an outstanding defender who finished his career with three goals, nine assists, and 15 points.

Perkins is the fourth softball player being inducted. A 2007 graduate, she had a .336 batting average, 99 runs, 185 hits, 35 doubles, 36 home runs, 139 RBI and a .584 slugging percentage. She has the career and single-season home run record (23) for TNU. Perkins helped lead Trevecca to its first two NAIA National Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. She was selected to the NFCA and NAIA All-American First Team in 2007.

Perkins was recruited by Angela Sullivan, but played for Sullivan and Ernie Reynolds.

Ernie Reynolds said of Perkins induction, "Jennifer is one of the most competitive natured player I've been around or coached. She was at her best in the clutch situations. Her team prospered from her outstanding defensive play and consistent power at the plate. She truly deserves to be considered among the best to have ever played at Trevecca."

Price was a member of the men's basketball team and graduated in 2005 after spending two years on the hardwood. He averaged 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game during his career. Price was selected to the NAIA All-American Second Team and was the TranSouth Players of the Year in 2004-05. He helped lead the Trojans to a 25-8 record that year as TNU advanced all the way to the sweet 16 on the NAIA National Tournament.

Sam Harris coached Price for two seasons at Trevecca. Harris said, "Eric made himself into a great player offensively and defensively leading us to the TranSouth Championship and then on to the Sweet 16. When he came here he probably thought he was a offensive player, but he made himself a complete player with great defense. He had soft hands and could pass the ball so well. He could create space for his shot and then finish with a tremendous touch."

One of the best women's basketball players in Trevecca history, Weaver finished her career in 2006 with four career records: Scoring average (16.5), field goal percentage (60.8), rebounding average (10.5) and total blocks (249). She also had 10 single-season records including points (623), rebounding average (10.9), consecutive free throws made (57), and games played (36). She was an NAIA All-American First Team selection in 2005-06, a six-time TranSouth Player of the Week selection, TSAC Player of the Year, and NAIA All-National Tournament Team selection. Weaver helped lead Trevecca to back-to-back NAIA Elite Eight appearances as well.

Gary Van Atta coached Jackie Weaver in her senior year at Trevecca. Van Atta said, "Jackie was one of the best players in the NAIA during her two years here leading the NAIA in blocks and setting numerous records. Her will to win was tremendous and she was always in the gym working on her game outside of practice. She loved to play and helped lead us to the best single-season record in school history at 31-5. The honor is well deserved for her play on the court and her contributions to the Trevecca community overall."

There are now a total of 55 inductees to the Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame which was started in 1993.

All four of the 2012 members have agreed to be on hand for induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012. The official presentation and induction will take place during halftime of the women's Homecoming basketball game in the Trojan Fieldhouse.

Both Trojan basketball teams will open regular season play at Homecoming. The women's team will host Mid-Continent at 3:00, and the men will host Tennessee Wesleyan at 5:00 PM.
