Tulane's Malone to speak at Flagler College Ideas & Images event on March 6

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (02/21/2014)(readMedia)-- Dr. Bill C. Malone will speak at Flagler College as part of the College's "Ideas and Images" program on March 6.

Malone, professor emeritus of history at Tulane University, is widely acknowledged as the nation's foremost authority in Southern music.

In 1993, Malone was awarded the Ray and Pat Brown Award for the Best Book in American Popular Culture for his book "Singing Cowboys and Musical Mountaineers: Southern Culture and the Roots of Country Music." Some of his other books include: "Country Music, USA," "Stars of Country Music" and "Don't Get above Your Raisin': Country Music and the Southern Working Class."

Malone is also responsible for the production and annotation of the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Country Music.

Dr. Malone received his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Ph. D. from the University of Texas, Austin. He has served on the faculties of Southwest Texas State University, Murray State University, Wisconsin State University, and Tulane University.

Malone's lecture, "The Common Folk Culture of the South: The Interrelationship of Blacks and Whites in the Making of Dixie's Music," will take place at 7 p.m. in the Flagler Room of Ponce de Leon Hall, 74 King St., St. Augustine.

"Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists Program" features an international composition of artists and authors, introducing a fresh and creative component to the greater St. Augustine community.
