Tyler Heslop Receives Final Convocation Award

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (04/27/2011)(readMedia)-- At Final Convocation on April 21, Hampden-Sydney College junior Tyler Mackenzie Heslop received the Philip H. Ropp Literary Award, presented by Mr. Christopher H. Griggs, H-SC Class of 2012 and Chair of the Board of Publications. The Ropp Award is Hampden-Sydney's highest recognition of literary achievement by a student, with preference given to creative writing. Presented annually by the Board of Publications, the award honors the character and gifts of Dr. Philip Hortenstine Ropp '30, professor of English at Hampden-Sydney from 1935 to 1968.

Tyler was recently selected Editor of the Garnet, the campus literary magazine. He is a member of the German Club and the social fraternity Beta Theta Pi. An English major, Tyler graduated from Riverbend High School and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Jeffery L. Heslop of Spotsylvania.

A private college for men, Hampden-Sydney is ranked in the top tier of liberal arts colleges by U.S. News & World Report. The College is known for its liberal arts curriculum, the Honor Code which stresses individual and collective responsibility, and a focus on the needs of young men.
