U.S. News and World Report Names SUNY Canton a Top Regional College

CANTON, NY (09/09/2014)(readMedia)-- U.S. News and World Report today announced that SUNY Canton has earned a spot in the 30th edition of its "Best Colleges" publication.

The college was ranked among the top 61 schools in the "Regional Colleges-North" division. Selection in the category is based on colleges that focus on undergraduate education but grant fewer than half their degrees in liberal art disciplines. The North division includes colleges specifically located in the Northeastern United States, including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.

"SUNY Canton offers a wide range of degree offerings in the areas of engineering technology, criminal justice, nursing and health, business, information technology, legal studies, veterinary technology, graphic and multimedia design, and many others, all with the applied focus that are so critical in today's economy," said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. "We're affordable, entrepreneurial, and have great student activities. Our focus on student success makes our college a perfect choice for students wanting to graduate from a great major into a great career."

The 2015 edition of "Best Colleges" includes data on nearly 1,800 schools nationwide to help parents and students evaluate their options. Eligible schools are ranked on up to 16 measures of academic excellence. Outcome-related measures, such as graduation and retention rates, account for 30 percent of the rankings and are the most heavily weighted factors in the methodology.

This is the fourth year in a row that SUNY Canton has been included in the top Regional Colleges-North division.

"Again this year, we are proud to see so many of our SUNY campuses recognized as being among the best nationally by U.S. News and World Report," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. "In every community across New York State, SUNY colleges and universities like SUNY Canton offer students top quality degree programs and applied learning opportunities that prepare them for success in today's 21st-century global economy."

The U.S. News and World Report announcement is the latest in a series of awards the college has received. SUNY Canton's four-year bachelor's degrees in Finance and Legal Studies were recently named among the most economical online programs in the U.S. by SR Education Group. The college's bachelor's degree in Emergency Management was also named as one of the top ten online programs of its kind in the country.

The rankings will be published in the "Best Colleges 2015" guidebook will go on sale Sept. 23. More information about the rankings is available now at www.usnews.com/education.
