AIKEN, SC (03/29/2018) University of South Carolina Aiken students gathered more than eggs for Easter baskets for senior citizens in the area.

Members of the student body partnered with the United Way of Aiken County to collect items to be used to fill baskets for the older residents in town as part of the "Be a Bunny" program.

"This event is important because people often times forget about senior citizens within the community, and they need love and support just as much as anyone else," said Adrielle Cooper, student coordinator for the effort.

"In the words of Lilo & Stitch, 'Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind.'"

Baskets included comfort items like: bath supplies and toiletries; books and crossword puzzles; sugar free candy; protein and nutrient drinks; eyeglass cases; first aid supplies; nigh lights and flashlights; stamps and stationery; pill boxes and non-perishable food items.

The students gathered several baskets full of items, which will be distributed to seniors by the United Way.

"This is the first year we have helped United Way with the Be a Bunny fundraiser," said Kevin Nolan, assistant director for student life.

"It has been an excellent experience, and it is always amazing to see our USC Aiken family come together to help the community. This is a great cause for extraordinary senior citizens in the Aiken community."
