AIKEN, SC (01/23/2018) Dr. Daren Timmons, dean of the Unviversity of South Carolina Aiken's College of Sciences and Engineering, addressed the community, business, and politicial leaders of Augusta during the Kiwanis' weekly luncheon meeting at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

He shared with members of the Downtown Kiwanis of Augusta the benefits of a liberal arts education.

"Education is one of the key factors that elevate a community," Timmons said.

"It's critical to have strong programs, to continue to challenge our students, and to grow. We aim to grow students' intellect and cultural understanding, which is is important in a globally connected world."

He explained that with a liberal arts education, graduates gain a broad-based understanding of knowledge, culture, and community that they can then build on with their designated specializations.

Through high-impact, experiential learning opportunities offered at USC Aiken, students get professional experience - a bonus at this liberal arts institution, which is repeatedly ranked by U.S. News and World Report. In fact, once again, U.S. News ranked USC Aiken as the #1 Regional Comprehensive Public College in the South. The 2018 distinction marks USC Aiken's 13th time in first place and the 20th consecutive ranking in the top three.

"At USC Aiken, we prepare our students so they are ready to go to work and ready to make a difference," Timmons said.

"We help build a solid educational foundation as well as practical skills that translate to the workforce."
