University of Kansas music composition student wins prestigious music composition award

LAWRENCE, KS (02/08/2012)(readMedia)-- Jason Charney, an award-winning student studying music composition and music theory at the University of Kansas, recently won the Allen Strange Award from the Society of Electro-acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS). This prize is given to just one student per year. This year's competition was especially competitive, with over one hundred students competing for the coveted award.

Charney won the contest with his performance of Compass and will perform his winning piece at the SEAMUS National Conference from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11 at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.

Jason Charney, a Kansas native, writes tuneful music for voice and orchestral instruments, as well as electroacoustic and interactive media. He is completing an undergraduate degree in music composition and theory (studying with Professor Kip Haaheim) at KU, where he won the Anthony B. Cius Award for Most Outstanding Student Composer and the Edward M. Mattila Award for Most Outstanding Electronic Music Composer.
